Texas Substitute Teaching License
The Texas Education Agency does not require substitute teachers to hold any type of permit or certificate. Instead, each school district or education service center in Texas is responsible for setting requirements for and hiring substitute teachers.

Most Texas school districts require that you have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree before being allowed to apply to become a substitute teacher. Some education service centers also require you to undergo substitute teacher training before being allowed to serve as a substitute in any school in that region.
Most school districts/education service centers in Texas do not impose experience requirements on substitute teachers. Some, however, may prefer to hire those with some experience working with children over those with no such experience.
Criminal History Background Check
All substitute teachers in Texas must first pass a criminal history background check, including fingerprinting. Information will be provided to you when you apply for a substitute teacher position with a school district or education service center.
As an applicant to become a substitute teacher in Texas, you will also be asked to undergo a medical examination. This is routine and strictly to insure that you have no communicable diseases, such as tuberculosis. More information will be given to you when you apply for a substitute teaching position.
