Teaching Certification Renewal
A standard Texas teaching certificate is valid for five years. To renew it, classroom teachers must complete 150 clock hours of Continuing Professional Education (CPE) every 5 years. Principals and superintendents, along with counselors, librarians, educational diagnosticians, and reading specialists, need 200 CPE hours instead. Holding multiple classroom teaching certificates doesn’t increase the requirement. You still need to complete 150 CPE hours in total. Educators who hold certificates across classroom teaching, administration, and/or student services complete 200 total CPE hours instead. TEA emails renewal reminders about six months before a certificate’s expiration date, giving enough time to finish any outstanding hours. Renewal happens through the Educator Certification Online System (ECOS), accessed with a TEA Login (TEAL) account, where you’ll also pay the renewal fee. Keep written documentation of every CPE activity: provider name, ID number, date, content of activity, and number of clock hours claimed. If TEA requires updated fingerprinting or a criminal background review based on your certification record or employment circumstances, you’ll receive instructions through ECOS.

Reinstatement of Certification
A certificate that isn’t renewed on time doesn’t disappear. It goes on inactive status. To reinstate it, pay an additional $40 fee and complete the same CPE hour requirement that applies to renewal, 150 hours for classroom teachers or 200 hours for administrators and student services roles.
Certificates can also be revoked for unpaid student loans or child support obligations. Once those payments are current, reinstating the certificate costs an additional $50 in addition to meeting CPE requirements.
Teachers who can’t finish their CPE hours on time due to documented health issues or other extenuating circumstances can request a hardship exemption from TEA. The exemption covers the academic year in which it’s filed and requires the school district’s sign-off for currently employed educators.
