Alternative Teaching Certification in Montana
The Montana Office of Public Instruction offers a Class 5 Alternative License to those who might not meet all requirements for a Class 1, 2, or 3 license. The Class 5 Alternative License is valid for three years, and allows you to teach while completing requirements for full educator licensure.

Alternative Certification Requirements
Education Requirements
To enter into an alternative licensure program, you must have a bachelor’s degree in an area for which Montana offers an endorsement. You must also have completed at least six semester hours of a professional teacher preparation program before applying for Class 5 licensure.
When you apply for a Class 5 license, you must sign a Plan of Professional Intent that states your commitment to completing the necessary requirements for full teacher licensure within three years.
Examinations
No examinations are necessary to enter into an alternative licensure program or receive a Class 5 license. If examinations are necessary for full licensure in your endorsement area, you must complete them within three years.
Experience
No experience is necessary to receive a Class 5 license. Your experience will be gained as you teach under the Class 5 license while completing educational requirements for full teacher licensure.
Criminal History Background Check
All new teachers must undergo a criminal history background check, including fingerprinting. Go to your local police station that offers fingerprinting services. Mail the completed fingerprint card to Montana Department of Justice, PO Box 201403, Helena, MT 59620-2403.
You will be notified if there is a problem with your background check that will prevent you from obtaining a Class 5 license.
