Applying Through DC Public Schools
DCPS hires substitute teachers directly and organizes them into three categories: K-12 substitutes, early childhood education (ECE) substitutes, and school building substitutes. K-12 and ECE substitutes choose their own assignments and must accept at least two full-day or four half-day assignments a month to stay active in the pool, or they’re separated and have to reapply. School building substitutes hold a school-funded, full-time position and report to one assigned school every day. Screening and Clearance
Once selected for hire, candidates complete a DCPS Clearance Application. This includes fingerprinting through a FieldPrint location, a check against the National Sex Offender Registry, a tuberculosis risk assessment (with a TB test if flagged), and a 5-panel drug test through a DCPS-designated vendor. Fingerprint clearance stays valid for two years, and the drug test must be completed within two weeks of a hiring offer.
Interview and Onboarding
Most candidates complete a virtual group interview with the Temporary Instructional Staffing team, which can include leading a short mini-lesson. That step can be waived with a written recommendation from a DCPS principal. After selection, candidates attend a virtual DCPS Substitute Teacher Orientation and register with SmartFind Express, the system substitute teachers use to find and accept assignments.
