Substitute teachers in Oklahoma may be certified (that is, hold a valid state teaching certificate) or non-certified (hold a degree but no certificate). Your certification status determines what classes you can teach and the length of time you may substitute teach.

If you have a bachelor’s degree only or an expired Oklahoma teaching certificate, you may not work as a substitute teacher for more than 100 days each school year. If you hold a valid teaching certificate, you may substitute teach for unlimited days during the school year.

You may not substitute teach for more than 20 days in the same assignment unless you are certified in that subject area.

Education Requirements

You must have at least a bachelor’s degree to substitute teach in most Oklahoma schools (each district has its own qualifications). Some districts also require mandatory substitute teacher training for all substitutes each year.

Experience

Most districts do not require experience for substitute teachers, but some may prefer to hire those with some experience working with children.

Criminal History Background Check

All substitute teacher applicants must undergo a criminal history background check conducted by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The school district where you apply for a substitute teaching position will provide you with more information on this process. You must pay for all costs associated with these checks.
