Kentucky Substitute Teaching License
The Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board issues Substitute Teaching Certificates to qualified applicants.
Education Requirements
You must hold a Statement of Eligibility for a Kentucky teaching certificate in order to receive a Substitute Teaching Certificate. This means that you have at least a bachelor’s degree with a 2.5 total GPA and have graduated from a Kentucky teacher preparation program (including a student teacher internship). You also may receive a Substitute Teaching Certificate if you previously held a Kentucky teaching certificate.

Experience
Completion of a student teaching internship is necessary to receive a Substitute Teaching Certificate.
Criminal History Background Check
Before a Kentucky school district will hire you as a substitute teacher, you must pass a criminal history background check. The Administrative Office of the Courts usually conducts this. Additional Information
The Substitute Teaching Certificate allows you only to serve as a substitute teacher and not as a part-time teacher. If you wish to apply for an Emergency Substitute Teacher certificate, contact your local school district. You may apply for this if you hold a bachelor’s degree.

Use the application form listed here to apply for a Substitute Teaching Certificate. Make sure your employer fills out Section II to verify your experience. Attach transcripts if you completed your teacher preparation program in another state, and a $15 application fee. Mail all of this information to Division of Certification, Education Professional Standards Board, 100 Airport Road, 3rd Floor, Frankfort, Kentucky 40601.
