George Mason University special education certification programs include an online and on-campus Master of Education in Special Education, a graduate certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorder, and a Behavior Analysis concentration that prepares students for BCBA licensure, all through its College of Education and Human Development in Fairfax, Virginia. The MEd runs 30 credits over about 24 months, with online, hybrid, and on-campus formats available depending on the track.

Virginia offers plenty of strong options for an education degree, but George Mason University, in historic Fairfax, is one of the largest and most respected. For teacher certification programs in Virginia, Mason is the school educators have turned to for generations.

Mason’s location just 20 miles from Washington, D.C. puts it at the center of where education policy gets written. The College of Education and Human Development counts Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners among its faculty, along with scholars who’ve received the state’s highest honors from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. That advantage carries directly into George Mason University special education certification programs at the graduate level, where research and licensure pathways come together in one place.

Online Delivery Brings Mason’s Special Education Programs to Working Educators

George Mason built its reputation through traditional, on-campus teacher training and has since adapted it for online students: the MEd in Special Education runs both fully online and on-campus/blended, and its Behavior Analysis concentration delivers coursework in 8-week, asynchronous online modules built around working professionals’ schedules.

Much of the program’s applied research runs through the Helen A. Kellar Institute for Human disAbilities, a Mason research center that develops instructional and behavioral practices and technologies for students with disabilities. Mason’s online special education graduate program was ranked seventh in the country by U.S. News & World Report for 2026.

Graduate Certificates Add Focused Expertise to a Special Education Career

There are excellent opportunities for teacher certification through Mason programs at every level, but the highlights are at the graduate level. Mason’s online Master of Education in Special Education gives graduate students direct access to faculty research, and coursework covers ground that translates straight to classroom and clinical settings, including:

  • Computer Applications for Special Populations
  • Foundations of Language and Literacy for Individuals with Severe Disabilities
  • Collaborative Teamwork to Support Students with Significant Disabilities

Two graduate certificate tracks build on the MEd, and both are also available as stand-alone programs for anyone who already holds a master’s degree and wants to specialize. Both can be completed part-time.

Behavior Analysis Concentration (Replacing the ABA Certificate)

Mason’s standalone Graduate Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis remains a Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) Verified Course Sequence (VCS) only through the end of 2026, when that route is being discontinued. In its place, Mason now offers a 36-credit MEd in Special Education with a Behavior Analysis concentration, built to meet the BACB’s 2027 Pathway 2 coursework requirements for sitting the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) exam.

The concentration is delivered 100% online in 8-week asynchronous modules and is not a teacher licensure program. In Virginia, BCBA licensing falls under the state Board of Medicine, not the Department of Education. Students currently pursuing BCBA eligibility through the older VCS route should confirm their standing directly with Mason’s special education advising office before the 2026 cutoff.

Graduate Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorder

The 18-credit Graduate Certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorder focuses on understanding autistic individuals and applying research-based practices, extending beyond school-age children to adolescence, the transition to adulthood, and adults with ASD across the lifespan. It’s offered fully online, and students can pursue it alongside the MEd by completing 12 additional credits.

The certificate doesn’t lead to a Virginia Department of Education teacher license, but its curriculum is aligned with the Virginia Autism Council’s skill competencies for professionals and paraprofessionals supporting individuals with autism across the lifespan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What degree does George Mason University offer for special education teachers?

Mason offers a 30-credit Master of Education in Special Education through its College of Education and Human Development, available fully online or on-campus/blended, with a graduate certificate in Autism Spectrum Disorder and a Behavior Analysis concentration.

Does George Mason’s special education program lead to Virginia teacher licensure?

It depends on the track. Mason offers separate licensure concentrations in K-12 Adapted Curriculum and K-12 General Curriculum for those pursuing teacher licensure. The Autism Spectrum Disorder certificate and Behavior Analysis concentration are specialization tracks and don’t lead to a teaching license. For a broader look at special education certification requirements outside of Mason’s specific programs, our general guide covers licensure paths state by state.

Is the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) certificate still available at Mason?

The standalone ABA certificate remains a BACB Verified Course Sequence only through the end of 2026. Mason has replaced it going forward with a 36-credit MEd concentration in Behavior Analysis, built to meet the BACB’s 2027 coursework requirements for BCBA exam eligibility.

How long does it take to complete Mason’s special education programs online?

The online MEd in Special Education takes about 24 months for 30 credits. The Autism Spectrum Disorder certificate runs 18 credits and can be completed independently in about a year, or alongside the MEd with 12 additional credits.

What is Mason LIFE, and who is it designed for?

Mason LIFE is a four-year, on-campus transitional program for students with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Admission doesn’t require SAT or ACT scores, but does require a psychological or educational evaluation and a current IEP, and graduates earn a certificate of completion rather than a degree.

  • Program formats — Mason’s MEd in Special Education runs online, on-campus, or blended, and its Behavior Analysis concentration is delivered in 8-week online modules.
  • ABA route is changing — The standalone ABA certificate ends in 2026, replaced by a 36-credit Behavior Analysis concentration meeting 2027 BACB requirements.
  • Licensing distinctions matter — Virginia’s Board of Medicine, not the Department of Education, licenses BCBAs, and neither the ASD certificate nor the Behavior Analysis concentration leads to a teaching license.
