You may obtain a Building Level Administrator License if you wish to become a principal in Indiana. Prospective superintendents must obtain a District Administrator License.

Education Requirements

Building Level Administrator:
You must complete an approved college/university program in Building Level Administration and earn at least a master’s degree.

You must obtain a specialist or doctoral degree as well as complete an approved program in school administration/educational leadership.

Examinations

For both types of administrative licensure, you must pass the Indiana CORE Assessment.

Experience Requirements

Building Level Administrator:
In order to apply for a Building Level Administrator License, you must first hold a Proficient Practitioner or Accomplished /Professional Practitioner license, which indicates that you have at least five years of teaching experience.

District Administrator:
To apply for a District Administrator license, you must first have an Accomplished/Professional Practitioner License. This denotes ten years of teaching experience.

Document and Application Requirements

Applications for Building Level Administrator and District Administrator Licenses must be filed online through LVIS. You must attach/upload a current copy of your teaching license, plus mail official college transcript(s) showing receipt of a master or doctoral degree and completion of the approved building level administration/educational leadership program, to: Indiana Department of Education, Office of Educator Licensing and Development , 151 W. Ohio Street, Indianapolis, IN 46204.

Criminal History Background Check

You must pass an expanded criminal history check (ECH) prior to administrative licensure in Indiana. Depending upon your school district, they may conduct the ECH through a private company, searching records in all counties (in- and out-of-state) in which you have lived and checking state/national sex offender registries; or through the Indiana State Police, running a national criminal history background check and a check of the national sex offender registry. You must pay all associated fees.
