Teaching Certification Renewal
After four years, a professional teaching license in Washington D.C. expires, and teachers must submit for renewal.
In order to be eligible for renewal, teachers must show they have developed professionally during their employment as teachers. Teachers must complete six semester hours or 90 contract hours of professional activities to renew their licenses. Some examples of professional activities include:
- Coursework at an accredited university
- Workshops, seminars, or conferences sponsored by a local agency or school district
When renewing their licenses, candidates must fill out a renewal application form.
Candidates should fill out all application information, including official transcripts and documentation of workshops or other professional development activities. Teachers seeking renewal must show a minimum of three semesters of professional development directly related to their endorsement areas. The remaining hours may consist of general education or instructional development.

Reinstatement of Certification
Teachers whose licenses have already expired must undergo the same process for reinstatement as teachers who must renew. There are no additional requirements.
