South Dakota Substitute Teaching License
The South Dakota Department of Education does not issue permits for substitute teachers. Hiring of substitute teachers is handled by each school district in the state. The only requirement statewide is that you are 18 years of age and pass a criminal history background check.

According to the National Education Association, the pay rate for substitute teachers varies widely across the state. It may be as little as $40 per day or as high as $75 per day. Most districts pay substitutes who have a college degree more than those who do not.
Education Requirements
It is not mandatory statewide for substitute teachers to have a high school diploma. However, most school districts do require one, and some require substitute teachers to have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. Check with your local school district for its requirements.
Experience
No experience is required in order to substitute teach in South Dakota. However, some school districts tend to hire those with a bit of experience working with children over those with none.
Criminal History Background Check
Anyone wishing to become a substitute teacher in South Dakota must undergo a criminal background check. The school district to which you apply will provide you with information on where to go to be fingerprinted. Your fingerprints will be run through the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
