South Carolina Substitute Teaching License
The South Carolina State Department of Education does not issue permits to those who wish to substitute teach. Each school district sets its own requirements and handles its own hiring of substitute teachers.

Education Requirements
All South Carolina schools require substitutes to have at least a high school diploma. Some schools may require an associate’s degree or higher. Some schools also require new substitutes to attend training. Check with your local school district for its requirements.
Experience
Most school districts do not require substitute teachers to have experience. Check with yours to make sure.
Criminal History Background Check
South Carolina’s substitute teachers do not, as of yet, have to undergo a criminal history background check. This may change in the near future.
