Every Standard Teaching Certificate in Oklahoma expires after five years, and renewal now runs entirely through the state’s online credentialing system rather than a mailed application. Teaching Certification Renewal
Renewal applications go through the Oklahoma Educator Credentialing System (OECS), which you reach by logging into Oklahoma’s Single Sign-On (SSO) portal, selecting EDU-Educator, and opening the Renewal tab. A standard renewal application can be submitted as early as January 1 of the year your certificate expires, and it won’t appear in OECS before that date. Oklahoma no longer mails certificates or advisement letters. As of September 2023, renewed certificates are issued digitally, though you can purchase an optional printed copy for $25 once the renewal is complete.
Under Okla. Admin. Code § 210:20-9-96, the state offers two paths to renew a Standard Teaching Certificate:
- Option I: You’ve worked at least three of the past five years in an accredited Oklahoma school. Your employment record serves as verification, so you don’t need to separately document professional development hours.
- Option II: You’re not currently employed as a teacher or administrator. You’ll need to complete 75 points in professional development programs, conferences, or seminars approved by a public school district, and provide transcripts to verify any college coursework used toward those points.
Every renewal requires a $50 processing fee submitted through OECS. Under House Bill 3398, any teacher without a background check currently on file with OSDE must complete one before the certificate can be renewed. If your most recent certificate has been expired for more than a year, a new background check with digital fingerprinting is required regardless of which option you use. Reinstatement of Certification
If your Standard Certificate has expired for more than five years, Oklahoma will still renew it if you became certified in another state (see our overview of Oklahoma Teacher Reciprocity Agreements) and taught there for at least three of the past five years. That out-of-state teaching experience applies toward renewal the same way in-state experience would under Option I. You’ll still submit the application through OECS and pay the $50 fee, and the same background-check requirements apply if your file with OSDE doesn’t already have one on record.
