Mississippi Substitute Teaching License

mississippi

The Mississippi Department of Education does not require substitute teacher working in the state to have a license or permit. Each school district regulates its own substitutes and ensures that they meet the requirements.

Many Mississippi schools will let you choose the grade levels and/or subject areas in which you wish to substitute teach.

Education Requirements

Most Mississippi school districts require a minimum of an associate’s degree in order to be able to substitute teach. Some mandate that substitute teachers have a bachelor’s degree. Check with your local school district for its requirements. Official college transcripts must be presented at the time you apply.

Experience

No experience is necessary for most substitute teaching positions in Mississippi, although some school districts prefer that you have some experience working with children.

Criminal History Background Check

When you apply to become a Mississippi substitute teacher, you must sign a Child Abuse Registry Authorization Form and a Background Check Authorization Form. This authorizes the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation to run your fingerprints through a complete background check. You may not work as a substitute teacher until all background checks are completed.
