Alternative Teaching Certification in Minnesota
Alternative pathways to teacher licensure allow those who already have an undergraduate degree and have been in the work force to switch gears and pursue a teaching degree while working as a teacher in a Minnesota school district.

Although as of now, the Minnesota Board of Teaching has not approved any alternative teacher preparation programs in the state, policies and rules are in place for enactment once a program is approved. Included in these rules and policies are minimum requirements that will be applicable as these programs are developed.
Alternative Certification Requirements
Education Requirements
To enter an alternative pathways program, you must have at least a bachelor’s degree with a 3.0 GPA.
Examinations
To enter an alternative pathways program, you must pass the MTLE Basic Skills examination in reading, writing and mathematics, as well as the correct test of general pedagogy (two subtests) pertaining to your intended licensure area (details on each can be found at the link MTLE Basic Skills exam link above):
- Pedagogy: Early Childhood (Birth to Grade 3)
- Pedagogy: Elementary (Grades K-6)
- Pedagogy: Secondary (Grades 5-12)
You must also pass the correct MTLE Content Test pertaining to the area in which you wish to become licensed.
During the program, you must complete at least 200 instructional hours.
Experience
No experience is required for entrance into an alternative pathways program. However, once enrolled, you must complete a student teaching program; mentoring, induction and evaluation program; and receive recommendations from your school site team upon completing the program.
Criminal History Background Check
Because all teachers must undergo a criminal history background check, including fingerprinting, applicants to alternative pathways licensure programs must also fulfill this requirement. Once you have enrolled in a program (when it becomes available), Ask for a fingerprint card by contacting Educator Licensing at 651-582-8691 or by emailing mde.educator-licensing@state.mn.us. Your local law enforcement agency can fingerprint you and expedite the process. You must pay any and all fees incurred in the process.
