Learn how to renew a Professional Educator Certification or reinstate a Professional Educator Certification in Louisiana

Teaching Certification Renewal

Your Level 1 Professional Teaching Certificate may be renewed once after its first three-year period. To move to Level 2, you must complete three years of Louisiana teaching experience in your certification area and have three years of positive evaluations by your school district. You must also pass the Louisiana Teacher Assistance and Assessment Program.

Once you hold a Level 2 or Level 3 Professional Teaching Certificate, you must complete 150 clock hours (CLU) of professional development during the five years between certificate renewals. You may earn one CLU for each clock hour of active engagement in a district- or system-approved professional development activity. You are responsible for maintaining records of your CLUs.

You may use pages 4-7 of this form to renew your Louisiana teaching certificate. Make sure to attach renewal fees, copies of transcripts and/or exam scores as necessary, completed Professional Conduct form (part of the application packet), and CLU information and documentation. Mail all of the above to Louisiana Department of Education, Attention: Certification, P. O. Box 94064, Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9064.

Reinstatement of Certification

If you have a period of five consecutive calendar years in which you served as a teacher of record for at least 90 consecutive days, your Louisiana teaching certificate is considered to have lapsed. In order to have your certificate reinstated, you must prove that you have completed six approved semester hours of coursework. A list of approved courses for reinstatement may be found here. Before your certificate will be reinstated, you must file using the renewal form, pay the reinstatement fee, and provide all official college transcript(s) proving you have completed these courses.
