Learn how to renew a Professional Educator Certification or reinstate a Professional Educator Certification in Kentucky
Teaching Certification Renewal
Once you receive your Kentucky teaching certificate, it is valid for five years. For your first renewal, you must:
- Complete Section I of the Application for Certificate Renewal/Duplicate
- Have your school superintendent complete Section II of the application, verifying that you have at least three years of full-time teaching experience within the past five years (or 6 semester hours of college credit – if selecting this option, have the college verify this)
- Submit application renewal fee via check or money order payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer
- Show completion of 15 graduate hours or fulfill half of the CEO (Continuing Education Option) requirements
For the second five-year renewal of your teaching certificate, you must:
- Complete Section I of the Application for Certificate Renewal/Duplicate
- Have your school superintendent complete Section II of the application, verifying that you have at least three years of full-time teaching experience within the past five years (or 6 semester hours of college credit – if selecting this option, have the college verify this)
- Complete an approved master’s degree program (32 graduate hours) or complete the CEO requirements
- Submit application renewal fee via check or money order payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer
For subsequent five-year renewals of your teaching certificate, you must:
- Complete Section I of the Application for Certificate Renewal/Duplicate
- Have your school superintendent complete Section II of the application, verifying that you have at least three years of full-time teaching experience within the past five years (or 6 semester hours of college credit – if selecting this option, have the college verify this)
- Submit application renewal fee via check or money order payable to the Kentucky State Treasurer

Reinstatement of Certification
If your teaching certificate expires and you do not renew it before the expiration date, you may still use the Application for Certificate Renewal/Duplicate form and simply pay the extra fee indicated on the form. You must, of course, meet all of the applicable requirements above for renewal.
